For Spring ’13, the classic Damier gets a much-needed lifted facelift and overhaul. Marc Jacobs’ funky, swinging sixties-inspired take might look mod-meets-modern but this is a timeless motif. Contrary to popular belief, the LV monogram did not precede the Damier print. Actually, it wasn’t until after the death of Louis Vuitton when his son decided to adapt the logos to honor his father’s memory, combining his love of Asian art with his deep Catholic roots (think Japanese art and stained-glass windows). The Damier was first seen on their trunks back in 1888 (which was the follow up to a beige-and-brown stripe pattern) and was reintroduced in the 20th century.
The Damier has always been my favorite; most of my bags and accessories from LV have its checkered effect. I find it chicer and more elegant than allover monograms. Especially now, thanks to Marc Jacobs’ fresh vision! In playful sequins and all sorts of scales, these structured lovelies are at once youthful and mature, lighthearted and high-impact. My favorite of the season: the squared-off leather Marron, boasting sophisticated yet graphic, big, bold squares. The cliché suddenly rings true: you guessed it, it’s hip to be square.
